Who We Are And What We Are About

Luton Community Arts Trust which was founded in 1978 originally ran the “33” Arts Centre an innovative and popular centre in Guildford Street Luton, which unfortunately was recently demolished. In 1997 a local group initiated SNAP which was carried forward by “33” and is now administered and managed by the Trust from its new base in the Hat Factory.

The SNAP project provides many different creative projects for young people. We have extensive experience of working with young people who are considered vulnerable and at risk; working with these groups on these types of projects is a way of celebrating their positive attributes, so building their confidence and self-esteem.

Our montage project involves young people producing a painted backdrop and having their photo taken and then for our artist to montage them into their artwork to produce an original art piece. The artwork will be inspired and created by the participants by exploring current themes which effect young people and their lives, such as bullying, street crime, identity and aspirations. They will explore their own thoughts, feelings and views on the subjects and produce an artwork, which promotes a positive and pro-active attitude. Our team of project leaders and professional artists will assist them in brain storming, planning and producing a group art piece.

Our film and photomontage project involves a group of young people exploring aspects of film production and creative photography; they will use our studio to learn basic film production, editing and Photoshop techniques to produce their own artwork and films. Participants would gain technical skills in using stills and video cameras, studio lighting, professional recording equipment, industry quality film editing, Photoshop and sound editing software, along with storyboarding, script writing and drama techniques. These skills will lay the foundations to further formal training and qualifications within the creative industries.

Our Music Project involves utilising a professional recording studio. Participants’ lay down tracks and produce their own mini albums. With our artists they will then design and create the artwork for the CD covers. They will learn the skills of professional music production and creative aspects of marketing through packaging their music.

These projects would be beneficial because it would introduce the young people to SNAP’s drop-in, which will continue to support and encourage them to go into further education and employment. Also with an Arts Award assessor on staff the young people would be encouraged to work towards a recognised certificate. More importantly they will be encouraged and supported in gaining experience in positively and effectively communicating with peers and mentors in a working environment.

Snap aims to..

  • Support participant's queries in relation to Homelessness, Benefits and a variety of health promotion issues.
  • Encourage and promote young people to take up millennium volunteering, education, and employment and training opportunities so that they can achieve their potential as young adults.
  • Undertake outreach work as well as facilitate projects in-house within a professional photographic studio environment. Young people are actively encouraged to tap into their creative potential by developing new skills in set and costume design, creating backdrops, make up and modeling. Most important of all is that participation develops self-esteem and confidence through the group work experience.
